69 Years of Freedom, Infinite Possibilities Ahead

Today, Ghana celebrates 69 years of independence. On March 6, 1957, we became the first sub-Saharan African nation to break free from colonial rule—a moment that lit the flame of freedom across the entire continent. Kwame Nkrumah’s words still echo: “We have awakened. We will not sleep anymore.”

Sixty-nine years later, we’re still awake. Still building. Still believing that our best days are ahead of us.

What Independence Built

Independence gave us the freedom to dream. The freedom to build. The freedom to fail, learn, and try again. It gave us Tema Harbour, the Akosombo Dam, and the University of Ghana. It gave us highlife music, Azumah Nelson, and Asamoah Gyan. It gave us the courage to punch above our weight on the world stage.

But perhaps most importantly, independence gave us something intangible: the belief that we, Ghanaians, can build anything we set our minds to. Not because someone permits us. Not because someone funds us. But because we are free to create our own future.

A New Kind of Independence

Today’s generation faces a different challenge. We’re politically independent, but are we digitally independent? Do we control our own technology infrastructure? Do we build the platforms that serve our people, or do we wait for Silicon Valley to notice us?

At Cosbyte Technologies, we believe the next frontier of independence is digital. Just as our grandparents fought for political freedom, we’re fighting for technological self-determination. We’re building the digital infrastructure that Ghana—and all of Africa—needs but doesn’t yet have.

Why should a Ghanaian student looking for freelance work rely on platforms built for Silicon Valley? Why should a small business owner in Kumasi use payment systems designed for New York? Why should African problems be solved by people who’ve never lived here?

They shouldn’t. We can build better. We will build better.

What We’re Building

Our first platform, GigShip, connects Ghanaian students with businesses that need their skills. It’s a small start, but it represents something bigger: Ghanaians building solutions for Ghanaians. Technology made by us, for us.

In the coming years, we’re building platforms for food delivery, events, commerce, agriculture, and payments—all designed specifically for emerging markets. Not adapted from Western models. Built from the ground up for our reality.

This isn’t just about building apps. It’s about building the infrastructure that the next generation of African entrepreneurs will build upon. It’s about creating the rails that power the African digital economy for the next 69 years.

The Spirit of March 6

What inspired those independence fighters in 1957? It wasn’t comfort. It wasn’t certainty. It was the audacious belief that they could build something better than what existed. They looked at the status quo and said, “We can do better than this.”

That’s the spirit we carry at Cosbyte. We look at the current state of technology in emerging markets and say, “We can do better.” And we’re betting everything on that belief.

Our team works long hours for small pay, betting on equity that might be worthless. Why? Because we believe in building something that outlasts us. Because we believe Ghana—and Africa—deserves infrastructure built by people who understand our challenges because they live them every day.

To The Next 69 Years

Ghana’s story isn’t finished. The independence our grandparents won was just the beginning. Every generation has its own battles to fight, its own frontiers to conquer.

For us, that frontier is digital. And we’re not fighting alone. Every founder building in Accra, every developer coding in Kumasi, every entrepreneur solving problems in Takoradi—we’re all part of the same movement. We’re all saying: Ghana doesn’t just consume technology. Ghana builds it.

Happy 69th Independence Day, Ghana. Thank you for giving us the freedom to dream, the courage to build, and the audacity to believe we can change the world.

We’re awake. And we’re building.
